Roman and Karen met through a cycling group in Orange County, California in August 2014. At the time, they were training for the AidsLifeCycle ride, a week-long bike ride that spans 545 miles from San Francisco down the coast to Los Angeles. One fateful day in October, their group was participating in a fundraising ride, OCRA (Orange County Ride for Aids) and Roman skidded through some gravel and fell off his bike, resulting in a broken collarbone. His family was out of town at the time, so Karen followed him to the hospital and helped him until his family returned. As a thank you, Roman asked Karen to dinner and they’ve be inseparable ever since.
Wine has long been a passion of Roman’s and when they met, he was making wine with his friend, Ed, in a garage set up. Ed later decided to start producing wine commercially, instead of at home and Roman began to miss participating in the process.
In 2018, Roman and Karen decided to purchase grapes of their own and start their own wine label. The label, Spoke & Wine, was based on two of their great loves, cycling – which brought them together – and winemaking – something that brings them, their family, and friends together.
